It's Thanksgiving eve!

The weather is been amazing for the past couple days in southern California- incomparable sun, crisp air, and cool winds. It's finally Fall.

what a day.

my life seems to be more exciting when I'm panicking and rushing.
one of those days again.
woke up super late today.
worked on design for 7 hrs.
WEST 8. awesome lecture. aandrian gauze is an interesting person.

wow. heading back home on the amtrak was quite a trip.
I sit down thinking I am going to have 30 min of peace and relaxation until a drunk man, homeless I believe, sits next to me.. he offers me a drink in a tiny bottle. keeps talking to me. talks to himself. talks to me again. here I am. ignoring him the whole time. smiling. sketching. writing. ignoring him again. then I pretend I am asleep. but I'm really not. I look at the homeless guy through the window. he's still delirious looking over me. all I'm thinking is the horrible smell. smell of homeless + alcohol. ugh. didn't want to leave. i felt a bit bad to leave. making him feel i am leaving because of him. which I was. pretty obvious. who wouldn't. I tried to just hold it for 15 more min till my stop. but couldn't help. the smell was only getting worse and I was starting to get a headache. wasn't scarred of him. just annoyed at the smell and how uncomfortable I was. $9.50 for this. so I leave. peace.

"No need for a foot plate"

Here’s some text from the designer:

One late summer night in the studio I was thinking about the design of shoes in general.

I wondered why there was the need for a foot plate in shoes such as high heels.

When I look at a foot print on sand it is very clear to see that the main force goes to the heel and ball.

With a high heel providing the heel is supported, even by standing on a wooden block the foot naturally ’spans’ the gap naturally, with bones and tendons.

The foot has its own inbuilt strength and support so why duplicate this. You would not have a jumper with rigid arms between elbow and wrist.

So this raised the question, if the design of a shoe was an evolution of the early sandal and how can new materials and design techniques provide new solution?

So I set to exploring this question in a similar way to how I would design a bridge, examining the forces and looking at the most simple, elegant yet poetic expression of the forces at play within the materials used.

With this approach I then set about wrapping my foot in tracing paper, then binding it up in masking tape and then drawings various geometries onto and over the form of my foot.

The next stage was rather dangerous as I had to cut the shape off my foot with a scalpel and not damage the pattern or my foot.

The design this produced is a single wrapped geometry which starts under the ball of the foot and then over the bridge, then sweeping down below the heel before then twisting back on itself to provide the support for the heel and ankle.

This form felt light and airy on the foot. So we called it the ‘Mojito’ as it was rather like a twist of lime skin.

The material choice is simple: The shoe is a laminate with Carbon fibre for the core which gives the shoe its spring and strength, leather on the foot side and rubber on the walking wearing side. 3 materials, each doing a specific job.

We are now in talks with specalist shoe fabricators in for the inital prototypes, a firm in Italy would be able to make the inner carbon fibre core and then I would love to get some fabulous furniture makers in High Wycombe to ’skin’ the shoe in leather as their stitching detailing is second to none.

I spent the day in LA today... eating..shopping..walking..eating some more...laughing..talking..

Apparently Orlando Bloom had stopped by the Village (a random krn restaurant) that we had just eaten today...

Anyways.. I have discovered that guys apparel are cuter than womans.. so I bought a gray male V-sweater which I love.. and was dying to buy this burgundy wolven sweater but it was a bit too big.. I have three male pieces that I'm dying to go back and buy it!

I would like to watch 500 days of summer...

Seriously, why not grow vegetables in your lawn? If you are perhaps using plants that require high amounts of water anyways to keep your lawn pretty why not grow edible plants. They are pretty and edible- sustainable indeed, reducing cost and resource.

Architecture as Science

So as I was organizing my favorites I landed on Dirt, a blog about sustainable issues in landscape architecture and read this really innovative and interesting article on Neri Oxman.

Neri Oxman is an architect, artist, and researcher based on MIT.

She avoided using the words "architecture" and "biology" in naming her work and called it "Material Ecology."

The idea behind is that artificial matter constantly impacts our environment.
"Material is interpreted merely as any physical entity which corresponds and reacts with its environment.

My first time understanding how science in its entirety (biology, physics, chemistry) can be interconnected with architecture and engineering.

Basically she uses computer technology (computer algorythms) to solve constraints in the environment. She create shapes developed by computer algorthims and prints them using rapid prototyping, then she builts up layer by layer. The computer creates the shapes and form. The computer comes up with algorithims (solutions) to the biological constraints in the environment.

In terms of her furnirture work she is looking for a material that combines both structure and function so that only one material is used for the construction of her structure reducing material, energy, resource use, and cost.

I also landed on architect Zaha Hadid's publications website and my obsession with her work came back. I forgot how amazing she is.

Bambooed

So today is the earliest I have got up on a sleep in summer day. I'm quite proud of myself I didn't have to hear my alarm clock snooze 5 times and wake up the entire house.

On tuesday I went to school to take some pictures of bamboo at the Japanese garden.
Didn't notice how beautiful they are.
